WRP Board Defense applied to exposed wood framing on a residential home addition before the structure is enclosed

FEATURED BOARD DEFENSE PROJECT

Board Defense Residential Project

This Board Defense project documents a residential home addition where new structural framing was treated before roof sheathing, siding, and exterior finishes enclosed the wood.

Tinted Coverage Added tint helps applicators confirm complete treatment.
Applied Before Enclosure Framing was treated before sheathing and finishes were installed.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Board Defense Project Overview

This residential remodeling project included a major home addition where new structural framing would soon be enclosed by roof sheathing, siding, and exterior finishes.

Before the wood was covered, the entire exposed framing system was treated with WRP Board Defense.

Using a professional sprayer and a temporary color tint, the applicator achieved complete coverage across framing, roof members, joists, stairs, and other exposed wood surfaces. The tint made it easy to verify every area had been treated during application and naturally faded as the wood dried.

Applying Board Defense before the framing is enclosed helps protect structural wood against decay fungi, termites, carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, and moisture-related deterioration.

Helps Protect Wood

Helps protect exposed bare wood from decay fungi and long-term deterioration.

Insect Protection

Helps protect treated wood against termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles.

Applied Before Enclosure

Framing was treated before sheathing, siding, insulation, and finishes permanently covered the wood.

Tinted Coverage

A temporary color tint made it easier to confirm coverage across exposed surfaces during application.

WHY BOARD DEFENSE

Long-Term Protection for Exposed Structural Wood

WRP Board Defense is a borate-based wood preservative designed for application to bare, accessible wood before framing is enclosed. It helps protect exposed lumber from decay fungi, termites, carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, and other wood-destroying organisms. Learn more about protecting exposed wood with Board Defense or view the Board Defense product .

Helps Protect Against Decay

Borate treatment helps protect bare wood from decay fungi that can contribute to rot and long-term deterioration.

Helps Protect Against Insects

Helps protect treated wood from termites, carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, and other wood-ingesting insects.

Designed for Bare Wood

Board Defense is applied to clean, unfinished wood so the water-based borate solution can penetrate the surface.

Ideal Before Enclosure

Treat framing before sheathing, siding, insulation, drywall, and finishes make the wood difficult to access.

Efficient Spray Application

Professional spray equipment helps applicators treat broad areas of exposed framing efficiently and consistently.

Documented Project Coverage

A temporary tint helped the project team visually confirm where treatment had been applied before construction continued.

ASTM E84 TESTING

Documented Surface-Burning Test Results

Intertek tested plywood treated with two coats of a 10% Board Defense solution under ASTM E84-09. The treated plywood recorded lower flame-spread and smoke-developed indexes than the untreated plywood control tested under the same standard.

Board Defense-Treated Plywood

Two coats of a 10% Board Defense solution were applied to the plywood specimen tested by Intertek.

Flame Spread Index: 45

Smoke Developed Index: 110

Untreated Plywood Control

A separate untreated plywood specimen was tested as the comparison control under ASTM E84-09.

Flame Spread Index: 110

Smoke Developed Index: 170

IMPORTANT TEST CONTEXT

Results Apply to the Specimens and Conditions Tested

ASTM E84 measures comparative surface-burning behavior under controlled laboratory conditions. The published results apply specifically to the plywood specimens and Board Defense treatment described in the Intertek reports. They should not be presented as a guarantee of fire performance for every wood species, assembly, application rate, or construction condition.

Product selection and code compliance should be confirmed with the applicable project documents, building official, architect, engineer, or other qualified professional.

PRODUCT USED

WRP Board Defense Wood Preservative

This project used WRP Board Defense to treat exposed structural wood before roof sheathing, siding, and other construction materials permanently covered the framing.

Protect Bare Wood Before It Is Enclosed

Board Defense is a water-mixed borate wood preservative designed for above-ground bare wood, including framing, dimensional lumber, timbers, siding, and other exposed wood surfaces.

  • Helps protect wood from fungal decay
  • Helps protect against wood-destroying insects
  • Suitable for spraying or brushing onto bare wood
  • Temporary tint can help confirm application coverage
  • ASTM E84 surface-burning test documentation available

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Board Defense Application Questions

Learn when Board Defense should be applied, what surfaces it can protect, and what to expect after treatment.

When should Board Defense be applied during construction?

Board Defense should be applied while the wood is still bare and accessible. On this project, the framing was treated before roof sheathing, siding, insulation, and finishes permanently covered the wood.

Why was a temporary color tint added?

The temporary tint helped the applicator see which areas had already been treated and identify any missed spots. The visible color naturally became lighter as the wood absorbed the solution and dried.

What types of wood can be treated with Board Defense?

Board Defense is intended for above-ground bare wood, including structural framing, dimensional lumber, timbers, siding, logs, joists, decking components, and other accessible wood surfaces.

Does Board Defense help protect against insects and rot?

Board Defense is a borate-based wood preservative that helps protect treated wood against decay fungi, termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles when prepared and applied according to the product instructions.

Read the complete Board Defense application guide.

How many coats of Board Defense should be applied?

The technical instructions recommend applying the mixed solution thoroughly and applying a second coat 4 to 24 hours after the first coat. Cut ends, checks, cracks, and other vulnerable areas should be thoroughly treated.

Can treated wood be covered or finished immediately?

The treatment should be allowed to absorb and dry before the wood is enclosed or coated. When an exterior water-repellent finish will be applied, follow the product instructions for drying time and verify that the wood is sufficiently dry before finishing.

Is Board Defense fire rated?

Plywood treated with two coats of a 10% Board Defense solution was independently tested under ASTM E84 for surface-burning characteristics. The tested specimen produced a Flame Spread Index of 45 and a Smoke Developed Index of 110.

These values apply to the specific material and application tested. Consult the complete test report and applicable building requirements before specifying the product for a fire-performance application.
